Even though we know it is a tragedy, we keep reading because since it is a play, we feel like we have a connection to the characters and would like to change what they have done to turn it into a happy ending. We feel their angst and we get frustrated as if we were them. That is what hooks us . Shakespeare also manages to hook us by letting us know that it is a tragedy because nobody likes a happy story with a terrible ending right? By letting us know beforehand, Shakespeare manages to keep the book interesting.
